After five months of active participation by Battery Park City’s many four-legged friends across the neighborhood’s three dog runs, BPCA filled its first Earth Cube composter with approximately 1.4 cubic yards of waste.
Battery Park City Authority in New York now has started using safe and finished dog waste compost from its three dog runs as a soil amendment for municipal landscaping. This is part of the sustainability initiative getting attention of dog parents city-wide. Does the program encourage more pickups at the dog runs that offer composting? “We haven’t measured it,” said Bruno Pomponio, BCPA vice president, Parks Operations, “But yes, we’ve observed more pickups.”
